The benefit of Administration to a company in financial difficulty is that it is an effective form of seeking protection from threatening creditors via a moratorium, which allows a business breathing space whilst seeking to achieve the best possible outcome for its creditors as a whole.

Administration was previously regarded by smaller companies in particular as an expensive route to achieving such protection. With the arrival of the Enterprise Act 2002, the entry into administration has been streamlined by introducing an out of court route into administration under certain circumstances. The net result is that it is much easier to place a company into administration.
