Why the client needed our help

FWJ were instructed by a firm of accountants following HMRC’s notice of enquiry into their end client’s Company Tax Return.

The end client’ year end accounts showed turnover of £40m along with Research & Development relief costs of £5.5m. HMRC undertook a compliance check into the end client’s R&D claim and the tax relief claimed.

HMRC sent the end client a Notice of Enquiry requiring them to explain on the basis upon which all costs qualified for R&D tax relief (including how they intertwined with the R&D project) and to evidence those costs.

How we helped

Following examination of the claim and HMRC’s R&D tax credit investigation queries we prepared two detailed responses, which they accepted at face value.

The outcome

HMRC closed their enquiry without any amendments to the Corporation Tax Return (i.e. liability). This resulted in an incredibly cost-effective resolution for the end client without the need for prolonged or stressful ongoing correspondence with HM Revenue & Customs, ensuring they could focus their attention on their business

Simply outstanding service! From the initial enquiry to the final submission, I have been thoroughly impressed with the advice and communication, depth of knowledge and turnaround time from this firm. Specific thanks must go to Phoebe Pexton for her attention to detail, care and dedication throughout.
