Why the Client Needed Our Help
A leading developer and supplier of sporting equipment approached us after facing a major setback with HMRC. Despite significant investment in research and development (R&D), including testing new materials, performance analysis and biomechanical studies, HMRC refused their R&D tax relief claim.
The client’s work clearly advanced science and technology in their sector, but HMRC rejected the claim. They needed expert support to challenge HMRC’s decision and recover the relief they were entitled to.
How We Helped
We began with a detailed review of the client’s claim and HMRC’s reasoning for refusal. Our team prepared two comprehensive technical responses addressing each of HMRC’s points in line with the BEIS R&D tax relief guidelines.
When these responses did not resolve the dispute, we prepared to escalate the matter to the First-tier Tax Tribunal. Before the hearing, HMRC invited the client to a final formal meeting. We helped the client prepare thoroughly, presenting their R&D work in technical yet accessible language, clarifying the uncertainties their projects aimed to resolve, and aligning their explanations with HMRC’s published criteria for eligible R&D activity.
The Outcome
Within hours of the final meeting, HMRC accepted the claim in full. This outcome ended a year-long dispute, secured £323,778.60 in R&D tax relief for the client, and avoided the cost and delay of a tribunal hearing. It was a decisive and cost-effective resolution that allowed the client to refocus resources on innovation and growth.
Simply outstanding service!
