Why the client needed our help

Our client, an individual, had been served with a statutory demand by HMRC which they believed to be unjustified and wanted cancelled.

How we helped

We were able to provide expert advice on the merits of the demand and determine that there were sufficient grounds to oppose it. We prepared a letter on behalf of the client seeking the voluntary withdrawal of the demand but HMRC did not respond on the basis that there was an underlying dispute which needed to be resolved first.

We then assisted our client with preparing an urgent application to challenge the statutory demand which, once issued, HMRC sought to have withdrawn by offering to withdraw the statutory demand.

We negotiated with HMRC that our client would only seek to withdraw their application if it agreed to withdraw the demand and pay our client’s costs in full.

The outcome

HMRC withdrew the demand and agreed to pay not only our client’s costs for making the application, but all those incurred prior to this.

FWJ did precisely what it set out to do. I am extremely grateful for its assistance.

A client who had received a Request for Security from HMRC for a sum that would have caused their company severe financial difficulties. We helped them to have the entire bill withdrawn
